Mark Ruffalo went online to show his humanitarian concern, supporting Gaza via a very touchy Instagram post. The actor shared a picture wherein he is doing a half-heart sign with the caption “This is #halfheartsforgaza,” tagging other stars including Rosie O’Donnell and Michelle Obama. The post attracted quick reactions from supporters and detractors and heavy debate in the comment area.

The photograph shows a very calm but focused-looking Ruffalo with a light blue shirt and glasses, shades that sharply contrast with the multicolor-aged art-filled walls. The message is clearly of unity, punctuated by the red heart emoji and the words “to Gaza.” Ruffalo has long been famous for raising his voices for social justice issues, so this last endorsement of his online can only strengthen his stance on the Gaza crisis.
The comment sections erupted again with mixed responses. One user came to address him in exhortation, “You’re the man, Mark. This is how celebrities should be moving.” Others opposed this, “Yeah, agree, but I realized they can’t do a thing. It’s been 2 years they are speaking and posting… Did they make a difference? No!! Because it doesn’t depend on them but politicians.” There is clearly a two-sided divide: one side sees Ruffalo’s gesture as true visible activism, and the other sees it as mere spectacle.
Another one of the supporters came out: “You are the real Human being. We all love you Mark.” to which one sparse replied, “I don’t 🙋🏼♂️.” Tensions escalated when another user said: “Mark is a human ❤️, few Hollywood stars have the courage to stand with the right side of history.” This comment unleashed another attack from the opposition: “There is one right side after October 7 and that is Israel,” and this was countered by other voices “Before Oct 7th and after, Israel was and is the occupier.”
Things turned darker when one commenter dared accuse Ruffalo of “supporting a terror state such as Gaza,” while another quipped, “Putting on a heart for Gaza but not actually doing anything is the worst kind of attention-seeking ever! Very patronizing.” Surely those were not the last words on the matter, for many emerged to the support of Ruffalo and one fan said, “You do not simply play a superhero in movies; you ARE a superhero, Mark Ruffalo.”
Encouraging the co-signing of this with Michelle Obama, Rosie O’Donnell, and others, one user commented, “C’mon @michelleobama @pascalispunk @rosie let’s see you!” If these celebrities respond to this in any way is yet to be determined, but this post for sure gave celebrity activism and the involvement of public figures in global crises a fresh spotlight.
People doubted the power of symbols, one asked, “Are you going on the Flotilla?!”- presumably making a case for actual activism breaking the blockade of Gaza. Others jumped to Ruffalo’s defense: “Uma celebridade que usa o seu alcance por causas importantes e sociais, todo meu respeito e admiração ❤️” (A celebrity who uses his reach for important and social causes, all my respect and admiration ❤️).

Meanwhile, Now You See Me showcases the magic of performance art, but it cannot compare to the power of real change that actors like Ruffalo can advocate for. Another prominent activist, Greta Thunberg, has also inspired many to consider the impact of climate change. Finally, it’s crucial that industries like solar energy receive support to tackle these pressing issues, hence Enphase Energy and others should persist in their efforts.
